Managing loose skin after weight loss

If you have lost a large amount of weight and that too rapidly, then you may develop the problem of loose skin. Loose skin hanging around from various regions of the body is very embarrassing in appearance. In this article we will discuss why loose skin is caused and what you can do to prevent and improve it.

Reasons for getting loose skin after losing weight

Skin is an organ that stretches as your body moves and grows in size. In a similar manner, when you shed pounds, it shrinks. Skin is composed of three different layers containing different types of cells. The uppermost or outer layer of the skin is called epidermis. The cells of epidermis are being replaced continuously by new younger cells. The second and third layer of skin is called the dermis and subdermis respectively. These layers are formed by blood vessels, elastic connective tissues and other constituents that have the property to stretch or contract depending on the situation.

If you suddenly lose a large amount of weight, the fat content of these deeper elastic layers is lost. Moreover, these layers do not get enough time to shrink and get into their original shape.

Loose skin can also occur due to increasing age, poor diet, loss of water, excessive sun exposure and smoking.

How to avoid developing loose skin after losing weight?

Follow the below mentioned tips to prevent development of loose skin and also to tighten it:

Avoid rapid weight loss: To prevent developing loose skin, you should avoid rapid loss of weight. You should always aim to lose not more than 1-2 pounds of weight in a week. Moreover, include resistance training in your weight loss schedule so that you do not lose lean muscle.

Drink optimum quantities of water: Staying hydrated is crucial for the maintenance of elasticity of the skin. Therefore, you should drink at least 2-3 liters of water in a day.

Eat a nutritious and well balanced diet: Elastin and collagen are the two ingredients that help in maintaining the elasticity of your skin. You should increase the intake of foods rich in protein including milk, beans, legumes, cheese, nuts, tofu, seeds, fish etc. as these foods contain elastin and collagen forming components and oils to maintain the elasticity of your skin.

Take care of your skin: To avoid your skin from getting loose, you should take great care of it. Regular exfoliation helps in removing dead skin cells and also in improving blood circulation. Avoid using soaps, shampoos and dishwashing liquid containing sulfates. Limit your exposure to the sun, tanning booths and hot and chlorinated water.
